AI as a Tool for Green Activism: Empowering Young Europeans to Protect the Planet

In a world facing growing environmental challenges, young people are searching for new and effective ways to protect the planet. Our Erasmus+ youth exchange project “AI as a Tool for Green Activism” brought together innovation, sustainability, and youth participation by showing how artificial intelligence can become a powerful ally in environmental action.

The project aimed to equip young people with practical digital skills and environmental awareness, enabling them to use AI tools to support green activism in their communities. At the same time, it promoted intercultural dialogue and built a strong international network of young environmental advocates committed to positive change.

The heart of the project was an eight-day youth exchange held in Kemer, Türkiye in October 2025. A total of 28 young participants and 6 group leaders from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Türkiye, the Netherlands, and Germany took part. Participants aged 18–30 came from diverse educational and social backgrounds, creating a rich intercultural learning environment.

Through non-formal education methods, participants joined practical AI workshops, environmental simulations, teamwork challenges, and creative media labs. They learned how artificial intelligence can help analyse environmental data, design awareness campaigns, and communicate sustainability messages more effectively.

Instead of focusing only on theory, the project emphasized learning by doing. Mixed international teams worked on real environmental challenges and designed AI-based green campaigns, including videos, digital posters, and online awareness materials. These creative outputs showed how technology and activism can work together to influence public behaviour and promote sustainable lifestyles.

Alongside digital skills, participants strengthened key soft skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and intercultural understanding. Living and learning together helped them build friendships across borders and develop a stronger sense of European solidarity.

The project achieved and in many areas exceeded, its original objectives. Participants significantly improved their understanding of AI tools, environmental issues, and digital activism. Many reported higher confidence and motivation to take part in local green initiatives after returning home.

A lasting international network of young activists was created, and participants continue to exchange ideas and cooperate on environmental topics. Partner organisations also strengthened their capacity to deliver innovative, digital, and sustainability-focused youth projects at European level.

Sustainability was not only a topic but also a practice throughout the project. Digital tools replaced printed materials, reusable bottles were encouraged, and waste reduction was actively promoted. This ensured that the project itself reflected the green values it taught.

High-quality management, strong cooperation between partners, and continuous monitoring ensured a safe, inclusive, and well-organised learning environment for all participants.

“AI as a Tool for Green Activism” demonstrated that when young people are given the right tools and international support, they can become powerful agents of change. By combining artificial intelligence with environmental responsibility, the project opened new pathways for youth participation in sustainability.

This initiative shows how Erasmus+ continues to empower young Europeans to innovate, cooperate, and build a greener future together.
